Touchy-feely politics did not begin with Tony Blair - both Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher were both known for outbursts of emotion and in their own ways opened the door to today’s more personal style of politics.

Now it is common for politicians to talk about how they were 'moved to tears' by events - and as the current migrant crisis demonstrates, these emotional responses translate into their policy decisions.

Dr Thomas Dixon was joined by a panel of QMUL experts to discuss the role of emotions in politics:
